Estoy Aqui en Guatemala, Guatemala

Here I am in Guatemala, safe and sound! I already have a lot I could say, but I'm going to try to keep it short and sweet.

My travels were flawless. Praise God!

I got on an earlier flight (7 instead of 7:30) from Austin to Houston and it ended up being the same plane for my connection to Guatemala City, so I just got off the plane, got some breakfast at Starbucks, made friends with some Austrians, and got back on the plane. Wow, only God could orchestrate that I didn't have to switch terminals...or even gates all by myself in the daunting Houston airport!

My first glimpse of Guatemala...stunning!

Mike and Sandi picked me up right outside the airport and took me around the city a little bit. I had spaghetti al pomodoro for my first meal in Guatemala (hopefully I will get more traditional!)

I'm staying with the Glicks in San Cristobal (right outside Guatemala City) until Sunday because language school in Antigua doesn't start until Monday. I'm thankful for this time to acclimate to being here. The Glicks are great and I'm having a lot of fun with them!

This is my view from the guest room I'm staying in. The family that helps out with housekeeping lives in the little casita. They are so sweet! They have three little boys who are 11, 8, and 4. I've already been practicing my Spanish with them...and playing tag...and tickling :)

Here is a picture of Benjamin (the four year old) and me playing....precious, right?

After dinner, Mike, Sandi, Oscar (he lives with the Glicks) and I went to Kairos, a place where families who have children in the hospital can stay. I'm sure I will do a separate post on this amazing ministry at some point. Whenever they visit, Oscar leads worship for the people.

It was so fun worshipping in Spanish!

I also got to hold my first Guatemalan baby there :)

I'm totally in my element and pretty much in love with everything Guatemalan already!

Tomorrow we are going to visit Antigua and The Oasis so I will get an idea of what's to come!

Side note: I'm really going to have to get used to not throwing toilet paper into the toilet so I can stop having to stick my hands in and fish it out....yeah. Twice.

  4. ah I totally know what you mean about the toilet paper thing haha. You can't flush it in Honduras either.

on a more serious note...I'm so excited to hear about everything God will teach you this semester. :)

  5. Meredith... I'm pretty sure San Cristobal is pretty close to Fundaninos... like maybe even just 30 minutes away. If y'all don't already have plans for the weekend, you should see if the family you're staying with would be willing to bring you out to Fundaninos. This would be a great weekend to come because the first Saturday of every month is when the kids have family visitors. For the kids who don't have family to visit them, this can be a pretty lonely day. The would love having someone to come out and play with them. Anyways, let me know if that would be a possibility. Glad to hear everything has gone well so far!
